What spray foam actually does that other insulation doesn’t

Fiberglass batts and blown-in cellulose slow heat down. They don’t stop air. Air moves straight through them, and in a Climate Zone 3A summer that air is carrying humidity with it. That’s why you can have a perfectly good-looking attic full of insulation and still run your AC nonstop in August without ever cooling the upstairs.

Spray polyurethane foam does two jobs at once. It gives you thermal resistance — the R-value — and it forms an air barrier, sealing the gaps, penetrations, and framing joints where conditioned air escapes and humid outside air sneaks in. Closed-cell goes further and acts as a vapor retarder too.

The practical version: air sealing is usually where the comfort comes from, and R-value is where the code compliance comes from. You need both, and foam is one of the few materials that delivers them in a single application.

Open-cell vs closed-cell: which do you need?

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that it depends on the assembly — not on which one is “better.” They’re different tools.

Because closed-cell carries roughly twice the R-value per inch, you need far less of it to hit a target — which partly offsets the higher price per board foot. Where it wins outright is moisture. In an Arkansas crawl space, closed-cell isn’t a luxury upgrade; it’s the correct material.

Plenty of Arkansas homes end up with both: closed-cell down low where moisture and ground contact matter, open-cell up in the roofline where you want thickness and quiet at a lower cost.

Attics & roof decks

The most common job we do. Metal buildings & pole barns

Bare steel sweats. Warm humid air hits a cold metal panel and you get condensation dripping on everything below. Closed-cell sprayed directly to the panel eliminates the condensing surface — the standard answer for shops and equipment barns.

Barndominiums

Metal shell, living space inside — which means the condensation problem and the comfort problem arrive together. Closed-cell against the panel handles both, and doing it at the framing stage costs a fraction of retrofitting later.

New construction

If you’re building, foam at the framing stage is the cheapest it will ever be, and it lets your HVAC contractor size equipment down because the envelope is genuinely tight. Worth coordinating early rather than treating insulation as a late-stage line item.

What spray foam costs in Arkansas

Foam is sold by the board foot — one square foot at one inch thick. That trips people up comparing quotes, because a bid priced per board foot and one priced per square foot aren’t comparable until you know the thickness.

What moves your number: which foam, how many inches, how hard the space is to reach, and whether old insulation has to come out first. Be careful with any quote dramatically below these ranges — thin-sprayed foam misses the R-value and may not seal, and you can’t tell once the drywall is up.

Rebates and tax credits in 2026: the honest picture

A lot of insulation websites still advertise the federal 25C insulation tax credit. That credit expired on December 31, 2025. If a contractor is still using it to close deals in 2026, that tells you something about the rest of their information.

What’s still worth checking:

Where spray foam can go wrong

Foam is the right call for a lot of Arkansas buildings. It isn’t the right call for every one, and there are real tradeoffs you should hear about before you sign anything — not after.

Curing and re-entry

The chemistry — isocyanates on the A side, a polyol blend on the B side — is reactive during application. The space should be ventilated and unoccupied during the spray and typically for 24 to 72 hours after, depending on product and conditions. Once fully cured, the foam is inert. The risk window is the install, which is exactly why mixing ratio, temperature, and applicator experience matter so much.

Termites and termite bonds

This one is specific to the South and it gets ignored constantly. Foam over a foundation wall or sill plate can hide termite activity from visual inspection, and if you carry a termite bond, adding foam may affect it. Call your pest provider before you insulate. We routinely leave an inspection gap at the sill so your bond stays intact — but you have to tell us it exists.

Roof leaks become harder to spot

In an unvented roof assembly, foam adheres to the underside of the deck. A leak that would once have shown up as a ceiling stain can instead travel laterally and go unnoticed longer. It’s a manageable tradeoff, but if your roof is near the end of its life, replace it first — foaming under a roof you’re about to tear off is money thrown away. Some shingle manufacturers also have specific warranty language about unvented decks; worth reading yours.

Combustion appliances and ventilation

Tightening a building envelope changes how it breathes. If you have atmospherically vented gas appliances — an older water heater or furnace drawing combustion air from inside — a much tighter house can risk backdrafting. Solvable, but it has to be identified during the estimate, not discovered afterward. It’s part of what we look at on site.

It’s not always the best value

If your attic is easy to access, your ducts are already inside conditioned space, and your air sealing is decent, blown-in insulation at a fraction of the cost may serve you better. We’ll say so. A job that shouldn’t happen is worse for us long-term than a job we didn’t get.

How the work actually goes

  1. Free on-site estimate. We look at the actual space — attic, crawl, or building — and give you a written quote. Not a phone estimate, and not a price that changes once the rig shows up.
  2. Prep and protection. We mask surfaces, protect finishes, and remove old insulation if the job calls for it. Occupants and pets stay out during the spray and through the cure window.
  3. Application. Foam goes on at the specified thickness, checked as we go. Thickness is the whole ballgame — it’s what determines whether you get the R-value you paid for.
  4. Verification and cleanup. We confirm coverage, walk the finished work with you, and leave the site clean.

Properly installed, it’s generally considered a permanent material — it doesn’t sag, settle, or compress the way batts and loose-fill do over the years. The failure mode for foam isn’t age, it’s bad installation.

Usually not, and you shouldn’t want it to be. Foam needs to bond to a clean substrate to form an air seal. Spraying over old fiberglass traps whatever moisture and debris is in there and gives you neither a proper seal nor a reliable R-value. Removal costs more up front and is the right call.
